Autumn Yoga

Here is some information about the particular organs we are focussing on strengthening in our yoga practice during Autumn!

Autumn is a time of letting go and contracting inward. Our prime organs of elimination are the lung and large intestine.
During this time our focus is on moves that stimulate the lungs and help build contractive force in the large intestine.
This helps you let go of the old before the rebuilding time of winter.
Working the large intestine brings inner strength and centredness in the mind.
These movements eliminate excess heat in the body through pure physical exertion. Help stimulate the removal of reside fats, harmful toxins and other bacteria throughout the body.
Plough and Headstand
Do not measure success in how well you perform a pose, but in how much you learn about your body and yourself. The inverted poses can take time to feel familiar but the preparation towards them helps build strength and body awareness. Have patience when working on plough and headstand.

The Lungs
Ryoho Yoga practice echoes the mood of the season. Autumn is the time of lung and large intestine. Here is some information to help you get the most out of your Yoga practice.
Breathing is an involuntary reflex – we can hold the breath, but its impossible to stop in completely. Although we don’t have to learn to breathe, many of us suffer imbalances in the way we breathe. Breathing shallowly uses only part of the lungs; bad posture adversely affects the freedom of the chest cavity; and emotions from depression to shock can contract and compress the chest, hindering effective breathing.
The diaphragm is the main operator in the mechanics of breathing, rhythmically contracting and relaxing. It contracts and flattens with the inhalation, effortlessly drawing air into the lungs, then relaxes back and up on the exhalation. As the exhalation is longer than the inhalation, the diaphragm spends more time resting, enabling it to maintain its constant function, and boosting the oxygenating capacity of the lungs. Other muscles help the exhalation and connect it with movement. If the abdominal muscles contract, the curve in the lower back lengthens, relaxing the spinal muscles along with the diaphragm. This allows the backbone to extend while the pelvis, dropping away from the waist, frees the legs.
Breathing effectively improves the oxygenation and detoxification of the body. Yoga is of immense benefit in establishing correct breathing patterns, which help extend and realign the spine.

Class timetable continues unchanged through Autumn.

See you in class!!
